Roman Polanski

Are you kidding me, why is everyone so butt hurt over this? Roman Polanski! Are you serious?
For those of you who are current event impaired, unless it involves Britney Spears, Roman Polanski is a celebrated director famous for directing such movies as “Rosemary’s Baby”, “Chinatown” and “The Pianist”. In 1977 Polanski was arrested in Los Angeles AND plead guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. Let me back up a bit. He agreed to plea guilty to the lesser charge. Yeah that’s right; the lesser charge is the unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. Otherwise he would have been charged with; rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance (methaqualone) to a minor. After realizing that the lesser charge would still hold a prison sentence, Polanski fled to France where he is a citizen. France refused to extradite Polanski since he was a citizen. Recently he was to be honored at the Zurich Film Festival with a Lifetime Achievement Award. When US authorities discovered he was going to be “honored”, and that he was planning on attending, they immediately contacted the Swiss authorities and requested his arrest preceding extradition. Since his arrest, there has been protests throughout Hollywood and believe it or not, the world.
Throughout the world actors, directors and other various artists have signed a petition for his immediate release. Just to name a few; Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Darren Aronofsky and some other schlubs I’ve never heard of, most of whom are French. There argument is that “he came to Switzerland to be honored for his achievements and the United States deceptively had him arrested.” A Specific statement that stands out comes from a representative of the French government, Frederic Mitterrand, who is quoted as saying, “I have very deep emotion for the French citizen and film-maker of international dimension ", "the sight of him thrown to the lions for an old story which doesn't make much sense, imprisoned while traveling to an event that was intending to honor him: caught, in short, in a trap, is absolutely dreadful". The Foreign ministry of Poland, in which whom Polanski holds a dual citizenship, also requested his immediate release.
So…let me get this right. An admitted pedophile, who fled the country to avert prison 32 years ago, is finally caught, and people are upset about it? Has the world gone mad? Since when is the act of drugging and raping a child excusable because you are a celebrated “artist”?
First of all, Poland, you need to look in the mirror. The day before Polanski was arrested you passed a law that allows you to chemically castrate convicted pedophiles. The irony of your support for Polanski is dumbfounding. Personally, I would happily let Polanski return to Poland, so long as you honor your new law and turn the man in to…well, less then a man.
France, you have no excuse. First, President Sarkozy, please fire Frederic Mitterrand. The man has publically condoned the act of raping a child, as a representative of the French government does he not speak for all of France? If so, I’ll be sure to never let my children near your country for fear that they will be preyed upon.
Lastly, for those of you who signed the petition to have Polanski released, you need to check your morals. When someone thinks of Hollywood in the terms of politics, the term liberal is often thrown around. It’s one thing to be liberal, and advocate health care reform or even the legalization of marijuana, but condoning the rape of a child, you’re giving liberals a bad name.
My only hope is that Mr. Polanski is retuned to the United States and spends the rest of his “celebrated” life in a prison being sodomized by the other, not so celebrated rapists. Good Luck
